Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting Latest blog

Until May 22nd, 2017, the Louvre will be displaying a superb selection of the finest masterpieces of the great artist Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675).

Wildly popular for his Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665) oil painting, which is often referred to as the "Mona Lisa of the North", Vermeer is, nowadays, highly considered as one of the leading figures of the Dutch Golden Age Painting, though he was little known to the public before the 19th century when the art historians and critics Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger published an essay about him.

Vermeer specialized in domestic interior scenes and created many amazing paintings depicting middle-class life, among them The Milkmaid (c. 1657–58), Woman Holding a Balance (c. 1662–63), The Love Letter (c.1666), and The Lacemaker (c. 1669–70), which are all present, today, at the Louvre, along with many other paintings by the artist’s contemporaries like Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, Gabriel Metsu, Jan Steen, and Pieter de Hooch.

If you’re one of our guests this spring, just don’t forget to mark this exhibition on your to-do list!

“Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting” is held in partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
