POP ART - Icons that matter Latest blog

At the beginning of the 1960s, in reaction to the abstract expressionism that was very popular in the US, at that period of time, a new art movement emerged in the US: The Pop movement.

In their art productions, the artists of the movement used the techniques generally employed by advertisers to criticize the consumer society and ‘the American way of life’.

The works were generally humorous and even ironic, sometimes representing renowned figures like Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and many other personalities.

Today, the Musée Maillol gives you the opportunity to discover a selection of more than 60 of the best works of Pop art from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art of New York, a collection that was begun by the iconic sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942).

Notable artworks from the Pop Art Movement are present on this occasion including paintings, prints, sculptures, and prints.

The exhibition displays pieces by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, and Alex Katz, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, and many other great artists. So, try not to miss it!
